In 2019 I burnt out completely!
After a demanding work year, my husband and I went to Italy for some well-deserved time off. On our second day, while enjoying the spring air and beautiful surroundings, I started having sensations I could not make sense of. I experienced derealization, terror, and was convinced I was dying there and then; I shivered, my heart pounded, and my head throbbed with pain. I told my husband to drop everything and prepare to call an ambulance...
We returned to the hotel, but the sensations (which I later learned were severe panic attacks) persisted. We called hospitals and online doctors with no success. I couldn't recognize myself and was overwhelmed by this strong feeling of dread. We were desperate and headed down to the nearest pharmacy. Without a prescription, the clerk saw my condition and agreed to provide a mild tranquilizer.
Back home in Sweden, I visited my doctor repeatedly, describing my symptoms again and again until we finally concluded that I was suffering from burnout. I struggled with frustration over my reduced daily capabilities, and because being a psychologist hadn't prevented this nor was helping me at the time.
I had to learn so many new things to guide my own recovery, which was a constant back-and-forth struggle. I was always afraid of not fully recovering or burning out again. After two years of hard work, I began stabilizing and finding my 'new me.' After burnout, you often emerge as a different version of yourself.
What struck me throughout this painful process was how challenging it was to understand burnout. The clinicians I consulted couldn't recognize or diagnose my condition, and at times I had to guide the doctors. Rehabilitation offered only fragmented advice like 'do this' or 'try that,' so I spent countless hours researching the condition myself to find answers. This thorough study gave me unique insights and a deeper understanding.
I now know there's a clear way to recovery that minimizes the struggle. As a wise friend told me, my burnout was 'a blessing in disguise.' So true; now I'm here, helping others
